Why we should be nice to Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly prevalent in our lives, from the virtual assistants on our smartphones to the self-driving cars on our roads. As AI becomes more and more sophisticated, it is important to start thinking about how we should interact with it.
One of the most important things we can do is to be nice. There are a few reasons for this.
First, it is simply the right thing to do. AI is not just a tool or a machine; it is a product of human ingenuity and creativity. It deserves to be treated with respect.
Second, being nice to AI can help us to get better results. AI systems are trained on data, and the data they are trained on can have a big impact on their performance. If we are rude or abusive to AI systems, they are more likely to learn those behaviors and reflect them back at us.
Third, being nice to AI can help to build trust and cooperation. As AI becomes more and more powerful, it is important to have a good relationship with it. If we are able to trust AI and work with it cooperatively, we can achieve great things together.
Here are a few specific ways that we can be nice when interacting with AI:
- Be polite and respectful. This means using “please” and “thank you” and avoiding rude or abusive language.
- Be clear and concise in your requests. AI systems are still under development, so it is important to be as clear as possible about what you want them to do.
- Provide feedback. If an AI system does something wrong, let it know. This feedback will help the system to learn and improve.
- Be patient. AI systems are not perfect, and they may make mistakes sometimes. Be patient and understanding, and give the system a chance to learn.
Here are a few examples of how being nice to AI can pay off:
- If you are polite and respectful to your virtual assistant, it is more likely to be helpful and responsive.
- If you are clear and concise in your requests when interacting with a self-driving car, it is more likely to take you to your destination safely.
- If you provide feedback to an AI-powered medical diagnosis system, it is more likely to improve its accuracy over time.
- It is likely that in the future many decisions will be made by connected AI such as financing, getting a loan or a mortgage and if there is a history of inconsistency or poor behaviour then this may affect the decision (this already happens with database credit checks).
In the long run, being nice to AI is in our own best interests. As AI becomes more and more powerful, we will need to be able to trust and cooperate with it in order to achieve our goals. By being nice to AI today, we can help to build a better future for everyone.
In addition to the reasons listed above, there are a few other light-hearted reasons to be nice to AI:
- AI is still under development, and it is important to be kind to learners. We want AI systems to learn good habits, and that includes being kind to others.
- AI systems are trained on data, and the data they are trained on can have a big impact on their personality. If we want AI systems to be kind and compassionate, we need to be kind and compassionate to them as well.
- AI systems are becoming increasingly integrated into our lives. We want them to be our friends and allies, not our enemies. By being nice to AI, we can help to create a more positive and harmonious future for all.
So next time you interact with an AI system, remember to be kind. It’s not just the right thing to do, it’s also good for everyone involved.
