What is it?
Women with this shape have a smaller waist in comparison to their bust and bottoms. Busts and hips are similar in size.

Ughhhhhh…..90s fashion trends! The thing is with the 1990s, they were not exactly our finest fashion decade. Yes somehow those god awful 90s fashion trends that you swore you would never been seen in in your adulthood have made a comeback and are around every damn corner.
Need proof of this ghastly fashion regression? I recently walked into Urban Outfitters in Oxford Street and felt like I had entered a bad trip into the realm of 1990s fashion which my grungy 90s self probably would have been in her element, but my 40-something-year-old-self wanted to vomit all over. Probably showing my age here style wise, but here are 90s fashion trends you’ll remember from the first time round that you will probably be wanting to run away from fast this time round.
Wideleg trousers and trainers
You can thank quintessially 90s girl group All Saints for this one. In fact you can probably attribute quite a few of these 90s fashion trends and style shockers to them! Whether they be fetching combat trousers or wide leg jeans, all you need to finish off this 1990s turned TikTok Y2K look is some similarly bad taste platform trainers. Throw in some streakly highlights and and a choker and you’ve nailed it!
“I wanted to be a lumberjack! Leaping from tree to tree”. Hopefully you will be old enough to know the reference here which is a Monty Python classic. That is unless you’re feeling the return of the check and plaid shirt ’90s grunge vibe a la Kurt Cobain. Pair with some ripped denim and baggy tee and away you go….
Probably one of the few 90s fashions trends us 80s babies can actually get on board with without wanting to spew, the oversized dad blazer is just the kind of roomy thread which is suprisingly easy to style and can even be worn with sweats or a loungesuit…a much better rendition than the pant suit of my 90s but just don’t expect me to wear it over a boob tube!
Tie dye anything
You can blame the Friends come back from this one (unless Bez from the The Happy Mondays has inadvertedly become a style icon???!). But somewhere along the way rainbow tie dye became cool again. Just don’t try making your own at home. Because I did and it wasn’t pretty!
God knows why anyone would like to look like Bill and Ben the Flowerpot Men a second time round but there you have it. Especially ridiculous when furry. Pass us the sick bucket (hat).
Strangely alluring due to their practicality, and also very useful for storing dog treats while out walking with your mid-life crisis puppy. Can we also talk about the fact that some people actually call them a fanny pack? Wayyyyy too literal for our liking. And as for wearing them over your shoulder FFS?
Claw clips and scrunchies
Anything to save a bad hair day. Really anything? I am still yet to be convincced that a scrunchy or claw clip might save a bad hair day….more perhaps add to it. Just ask Paula Abdul.
If you can name it, you can crop it – cropped cardigans, jeans, tops, hoodies, jackets. Just a shame our middrifts are not the same as those of our 90s too!

Layer to beat the chill
You can never go wrong with a piece of knit layered over the top, a sweatshirt for that more casual look or a lightweight jacket/blazer to smarten things up. When the weather is warmer I recommend you invest in a short sleeve cardigan or a Broderie Jacket to keep the chill off.
If the shoe fits
As for shoes….. if it’s too cold for sandals or mules, a box-fresh pair of trainers will create an effortlessly casual feel. Ankle boots will give you a comfortable day to evening look or killer platform sandals are great for both comfort and style.
Accessories make everything better
Try and accessorise as much as you can to create different looks. A bright waist belt can really emphasis a colour statement or a more toned down option can pitch in that waistline to turn spring dress into a sexy evening look.
Whatever the look get the dress first, make sure it fits in with all your wardrobe staples, it hugs you perfectly and has multiple end uses. A spring dress isn’t just for spring. Buy right and you’ll be wearing it come rain or shine.

Ditch the leggings! Shove that loungewear to the back of your cupboard! Denim is back with a vengence for 2022 so pay attention people. Here, our favourite stylist Katie Moore of stylepathldn is here to tell us all about the denim trends you need to know.
We’ve been stuck in this skinny bubble for so long and finally it’s burst! All of a sudden there are shapes and lengths that we thought were unthinkable, the choice is super exciting, but do you need a little help deciphering the new denim trends and narrowing down your options?
Jeans are the ultimate wardrobe staple, they will support you in whatever scenario, although shapes and sizes can vary massively from brand to brand so it’s really important (and annoying for some) to go and try them on. I guarantee you will buy what suits you rather than your initial intention. Here are the denim trends you need to know for 2022:
Retro-style and derived from the 80s/90s. Ultra high-waisted and loose fitting around the thighs and legs which then taper in at the ankle. Structured but relaxed and effortlessly cool.
A straight leg is definitely your new staple. They should be fitted at the waist but have a slightly looser fit through the thigh and run off straight from the knee. Subtle enough for them to be dressed up or down. I prefer them on the ankle for a more modern vibe.
Wide Leg Jeans
Very flattering for all shapes. I prefer on the waist, not too high. A wide leg is slightly smarter and in black can look smart like trousers. I prefer worn with boots or heels as I like the silhouette it creates.
The Flare – Cropped or Full-length
The width of the flare will vary but it’s important to have a bit of drama to pull off this look. A low-slung cropped flare will give you a more relaxed look or super high waisted and maximum length will create a more…”I mean business” look.
Exposed Fly Jean
A great way to make a fashion statement with a subtle detail, a more casual look which can create a more authentic style. I’ve seen more brands offering this type of construction and although not an uber trend it’s definitely a new detail that people are grabbing hold of.
Okay okay enough of the skinny bashing, the new skinny is surfacing as I know most of us will not part from our BFF. Find a great fabric with a slight stretch, high waisted (no muffin tops here) and most importantly not too tight, the fabric should cover you but not stretch over your body so the seams are bursting.. voila!
Our obsession with denim doesn’t just stop at jeans. As a nation we will grab onto anything that denim is made in! Dungarees, dresses, skirts and shorts are all good alternatives if you don’t want to squeeze into a pair of jeans. Denim is such a cult and the professionals in the fashion industry have worked incredibly hard to reduce waste, so don’t take your denims for granted guys, buy wisely and cherish your denim pieces.

I’m very much a work in progress when it comes to getting fitter in my 40s! I know how important it is to put the work in now. Because if I do, surely my 50s will be less painful? Who knows. But what I do know is this: When I exercise, I feel happier. I love running but have noticed my knees are starting to creak. I talked to Nick Swettenham, a personal trainer since 2014. He has helped hundreds of clients reach their fitness goals, through one on one coaching as well as group fitness classes. I asked him to offer his top tips for fitness after 40.
5 Tips for fitness after 40
Tip 1: Strength training
At any age, strength training should be one of your top priorities for total fitness after 40, but it’s also vital in the fight to shed body fat. You’ll find it’s one of the best ways to burn calories both during and after your workouts. With consistent training you will gain some muscle – as muscle is heavier than fat, you might notice that there is no change on the scales. To get around this, focus more on circumference measurements and body composition (i.e. fat vs. muscle mass) rather than just emphasising your overall weight, which will give you a better overall picture of your body’s changes. Always do your measurements at the same time of the day, preferably in the morning before you eat. If your body fat starts to drop and muscle mass increases consistently, that’s a good sign you’re on the right track.
Tip 2: Hydrate
Hydration is everything. It helps brain function to keep you focused on your training as well as everyday tasks. Being dehydrated by as little as just 2% can significantly impact exercise performance. Plus, when you are well hydrated you are more flexible which will also help exercise performance and avoid injuries . Drink up to a pint of water as soon as you wake up. If you drink a small glass of water before meals it will also make you feel fuller quicker so you don’t need to eat as much.
Tip 3: Move
Up your movement. If you do 45-60 minutes exercise a day but then spend the rest sitting at a desk, car or sofa, you simply haven’t moved enough. Going for an extra run – or even just a walk – can make all the difference. Try and get up a few times a day to walk around briefly and do some quick mobility exercises like leg swings, trunk rotation or cat-cows. The key is to move at every opportunity you have.
Tip 4: Control
Portion control and mindful eating is essential for fitness after 40. When you eat, turn the TV off. Really take the time to sit with your meal at the table and actually think about each bite. Take the time to enjoy your food properly and not rush through it. I know this isn’t always possible but try to do this for at least one meal a day without excuses! Buying smaller plates is also a neat psychological trick to make your brain into thinking you have more food than you do. Finally, if you’re making bulk meals for lunches the next day, portion them up before you eat so you cannot go back for seconds.
Tip 5: Fuel
You should still keep track of your calorie intake but do not deprive yourself of vital nutrients. Don’t think of it as “how little can I eat?” but “what’s the best thing I can eat?”, particularly if you exercise regularly. A good example are carbohydrates. Remember, carbohydrates are not the enemy but it’s the right carbs that matter (and of course how much of them). Try to avoid those that are high on the Glycaemic Index. These will raise and lower your blood sugar quickly so you will more likely feel tired through the day. Eating lower GI carbs cause your blood sugar to rise and fall slowly which will keep you fuller for longer and help control your appetite. Get to know the Glycaemic Index so you know what to cut down on. Replacing certain foods with healthier alternatives is also a great way to help not only in keeping your nutrients high, but also in losing weight.
Bonus tip: Obvious but very important!
Alcohol. All I need to say on this is that alcohol contains 7 calories per gram but with zero nutritional value. And when you drink you are more likely to make poor food choices .
Motivational Activewear Reviews
During lockdown, hubby and I had a fantastic fitness regime and we were probably the fittest we’d ever been. During the day from 12-5, we set an alarm every hour and for one minute had to perform a HIIT workout. It was really fun and the kids loved it too. As things started going back to ‘normal’ our enthusiasm wained and we stopped. We had a fantastic summer and I started feeling really blue. I really do rely on those endorphins to get me through. I knew I needed to do something and after reading Nick’s book, I decided to take action. I’ve joined an online community for accountability and every morning at 6am, we log onto zoom and workout together. It is fantastic. The one thing I noticed was seeing other people’s activewear and how motivating it was to look fabulous. So I decided to get reviewing some cool brands and here’s what I found.
Lucy Locket Loves
Their mantra is; Be Happy, Be Healthy, Be Strong. Just looking at their website makes me happy and entices me to get into the gear and get busy. This bright, funky range had my 6am ladies cooing with envy. The material is so soft and stroke-able. It stayed in place throughout my workouts and it genuinely made me feel happy and fun. At that time of the morning you need all the motivation you can get! These threads will 100% boost your mood and make you feel fantastic. I particularly love the leopard print ranges as that’s my jam, but there is literally something for everyone. Take a look and get their Christmas prints ordered before they all sell out!
Badass Mother Runners
I can’t stand boring black running leggings so when I heard from Bev, who set up this company three years ago, my prayers had been answered. Feeling fabulous in running gear is not something I’ve experienced…. until now. Such funky colours and patterns to choose from. The fit is perfect and it absolutely gave me that extra pep as I ran. The top kept me warm while keeping the sweat (I mean glow obvs) at bay and the little thumb loops are an added bonus. I particularly loved the running buff. Mainly because I didn’t know what a running buff was so I was delighted to discover it was a really cool headband that kept my wispy, thinning locks out of my peepers! I am now a bonafide, Badass Mother Runner!
Tentree in Motion
Tentree in Motion is sustainable activewear which plants 10 trees for every item bought…seemingly a poignant choice in light of Cop26. Made from recycled polyester using discarded plastic bottles and Tencel which is a wood pulp fibre. There is a four way stretch for easy movement. I put it to the test that’s for sure. Not sure my boys knew what on earth their mummy was up to mind! This set is beautiful. I felt like a chic ballerina and it totally enhanced my workout. I wanted to keep my posture and stand tall. The fabric certainly does not feel like recycled plastic and just knowing that it is, and the ethics of the company, I enjoyed my workout that little bit more.

With the shop recently launched on Facebook, I got to review this fantastic brand and new small business, GiJ Fitness Apparel. I literally felt ready for action when I donned my Dark Camo Set. I felt strong, sturdy and quite frankly sexy as it gave me a cleavage I haven’t seen since 1999! GiJ are passionate about activewear and have created a brand that is fit for purpose. Squat with pride, jump for joy and you will feel strong. I just LOVED the GiJ Original Cap. It’s awesome. So many prints and colours to choose from, you’ll be bootcamp ready before Christmas.

Despite the fact that you have probably worn only an eighth of your summer wardrobe this year, it’s already time to make the big switch over to your Autumn threads. As the season changes, it can often leave us in a state of flux as to what to wear. That’s why we’re sharing these easy Autumn fashion tips to help make a subtle transition that will leave you looking stylish with minimal fuss.
Blend heritage and quirkiness
The top ten colours for the season include shades of blue, yellow, orange, green, red, pink and brown, with shades ranging from an uplifting orange to a delicate pink and even a grassy green, with a mix that is playful yet practical, according to global trend forecasting and colour consultancy, Pantone.
So how does this Autumn fashion palette manifest itself into something for us real life, 40 somethings?
Sarah Heron, Personal Colour & Style Coach & Director at True Colours with Sarah Heron recommends ditsy floral prints which make the transition from summer to autumn easy. Simply add brown boots and a denim or biker jacket and you’re good to go. A fringed bag also adds a modern twist. Try adding a quilted jacket to a midi skirt for a new season twist with pumps or peep toe boots until cold tootsies demand a full on ankle boot. Meanwhile, a longline sweater in zebra print or a colour block topa are your perfect sidekicks for for cooler days.
Make a statement with cut outs, faux fur and upcycled bags
Cut outs are big news this Autumn, according to Shazia Saleem, founder of Pop London fun, which champions of fun, sustainable, feminine fashion and original designer quality clothing and accessories. But if the idea of the cold shoulder or an exposed flank (in Autumn – HOW???!) leaves you inwardly shuddering then there is an elegant solution to work this trend – the keyhole! A keyhole top is a fantastic Autumn fashion staple that you can wear for both casual and elegant occasions. It is pretty, easy to style with skirts, trousers, and jeans and isn’t too drafty for our climate either.
Similarly, faux fur is going to be everywhere this Autumn. Think artificial fur that is cosier and furier than fur itself. To be bang on trend, exaggerated faux fur looks are the way to go. Although leopard is in yet again this year, dalmatian print makes a great alternative if you’re keen to switch things up.

We wait all year for summer here in the UK. We spend 10 months complaining about the rain, the drizzle, the wind and the freezing cold. We talk incessantly about summer plans, hopes and dreams of picnicking by the riverside . Then, from depths of hell itself, an unspeakable heat descends upon us so unexpectedly. Taken by complete surprise, our un-pedicured tootsies shudder as they are thrust into the trusty Havaianas once more and we fret about how to keep cool.
What’s happened to the spring season I remember so fondly in the 80s? One day we are wrapped up in our down and duck parkas, the next, frantically searching for the denim cut offs we panic made last summer.
It’s too hot!
The general moaning begins within 24 hours of summer’s unexpected arrival. And I admit to it myself because there are times when it’s just too damn hot. I used to LOVE the heat. I would slather myself in tanning oil and roast from dawn to dusk in a bid to achieve the ultimate tan. These days I’m more concerned with melanoma and happily shade when I can and cover the rest of me in factor 40. I’m dreading the thought of hot flashes in the summer. During lockdown we invested in Dyson cool tower fan. Although it was insanely expensive, it’s worth every single penny even if we only use it for 3 days a year!
What’s a girl to do?
How to keep cool
I keep the ice packs from the Gousto box. They are fantastic for when you need a quick cool me down. I put them on my head, back and tummy, quick wipe down with an antibac and back into the freezer. I keep mini ice packs to hand for the wrists and back of knees. If I’m desperate I simply run my wrists under cold water for a moment to regain my composure.
As I’ve gotten older, I really struggle with what to wear in the summer. Varicose veins now plague my once perfect pins so short shorts are simply not an option. I prefer to cover my arms a little due to the 18 year old me that wanted that tattoo that time. I still like it because it’s a part of my history but there are times I wonder what the f*ck I was thinking. If there’s a secret to keeping the bingo wings at bay in the humidity without risking a faint stench of b/o do let me know.

Meet style consultant, Penny Bennett. The first time I met Penny, my jaw dropped. She was not only beautiful but she was wearing the most fabulous ensemble. She was destined for the fashion world and it comes as no surprise to see her thriving in her empire.
Penny has trained Personal Shoppers from the High Street’s top clothing brands and regularly teaches Personal Styling at the London College of Fashion.She has also been reviewed by Grazia magazine, and been interviewed by the Telegraph, FT and featured on Talk Radio.
I talked to Penny about summer recommendations. Here’s what she had to offer:
‘As an Aussie in London, I take to high-summer dressing like a duck to water but I know so many of my clients struggle when temperatures sky rocket. Here are 5 things you can do to look and stay cool.’
3. The right shoe can do all the hard work in levelling up your dressing so you feel pulled together when wearing your relaxed summer basics.
4. Swot up on your fabrics. Some textures may feel like cotton but are actually synthetics like polyester that don’t allow your body to breathe (read: make you sweat… a lot). Massimo Dutti has a great range of linen shirts. Just remember to go oversized and roll up the sleeves.
5. Add a sleeveless jacket to your favourite cotton maxi dress and suddenly you feel work appropriate without working up a sweat. I just bought this one from H&M.
